Departing from anywhere across Scotland's central belt we begin with a visit to the imposing Dunbarton Castle, from where Mary fled to France as a child before returning 13 years later to begin her reign, on to peaceful Inchmaholme Priory which provided a sanctuary for Mary and her mother prior to her escape to France. Following lunch a chance to enjoy the formidable yet ornate Stirling Castle, the site of Mary's coronation and her home in her infant years and the nearby Church of the Holy Rude where her son James was baptised against Mary's wishes spending an overnight stay in the historic city of Stirling.
Journeying North, the day begins with a visit to Huntingtower Castle where Mary and her husband Lord Darnley spent their honeymoon in the midst of a rebellion against her reign followed by a visit to the ancestral home of the Stuarts, Falkland Palace where Mary spent much of her reign. Lunch is followed by a series of significant sites along the River Forth including Mary's birthplace at Linlithgow Palace alongside St Michaels Church where she was baptised and Blackness Castle which is recognisable as playing the part of the Palace of Holyrood house in the film before overnighting in the scenic Lothian region.
The royal retreat of Craigmillar Castle provides the first location of the day, where the plot to assassinate Lord Darnley was originally hatched onward to Carberry Hill, site of the most significant battle of Mary's reign. Lunch is enjoyed in a nearby historic setting before a visit to the hidden idyll of Seacliff Beach which featured in the film with Mary gazing across the North Sea before completing our tour in the city of Edinburgh with a visit to the real Palace of Holyroodhouse, official Scottish residence of the royal family until present day.
